Day by day

Your 5-day plan

  1. 1

    Day 1

Marrakech over the Atlas · Aït Ben Haddou & a kasbah-hotel

A private departure from Marrakech and the great climb over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass — the road tops out above 2,200m before winding down to the south. We reach the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou for golden hour, when the earthen towers glow against the hills, and settle into a characterful kasbah-hotel near Ouarzazate. Allow roughly four hours' driving over the pass, padded for stops and photographs.

    • Tizi n'Tichka pass
    • Aït Ben Haddou at golden hour
    • Kasbah-hotel near Ouarzazate
  2. 2

    Day 2

Skoura's palmeraie & the Dadès valley

East into the palm oasis of Skoura to visit Kasbah Amridil, one of the most photographed earthen kasbahs in the south and once pictured on the fifty-dirham note. Then along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Valley of Roses — loveliest in spring, when the damask roses bloom and the harvest is gathered — to the red cliffs of the Dadès valley for the night. A relaxed driving day with frequent stops.

    • Kasbah Amridil, Skoura
    • Valley of Roses (spring bloom)
    • Dadès valley

    Day 3

Todra Gorge, then a camel ride into Erg Chebbi

A morning at the Todra Gorge, where sheer rock walls rise some 300m above a clear stream and a narrow road. Then east across the hammada to Merzouga and the edge of the great dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the heat eases, a sunset camel ride into the sand to a luxury desert camp — en-suite tents, fine dining and uninterrupted stargazing far from any town light. Expect a longer driving day, rewarded by the dunes at dusk.

    • Luxury en-suite desert camp

Dune sunrise, then back through kasbah country

Early to a dune crest for sunrise over Erg Chebbi, then a leisurely breakfast before retracing west through the kasbah country. We rejoin the valley road and settle for the night in a refined kasbah stay near Skoura or Ouarzazate, with time to rest by the pool and watch the light soften over the palms and the old earthen walls.

    Day 5

Return to Marrakech over the Atlas

A final morning among the palms and kasbahs, then the scenic chauffeured return over the High Atlas to Marrakech — roughly four hours over the Tizi n'Tichka, with a stop for lunch and the long views. Arrive by evening, or transfer onward to the airport whenever you are ready.

Good to know

Practical notes

  • This is the classic eastern kasbah road to Erg Chebbi at Merzouga — a different desert from our wilder Erg Chigaga itinerary, reached by tarmac rather than a long off-road crossing, with the great accessible dune sea and a sunset camel ride.
  • Five days involves real driving: about four hours over the Atlas each way and a longer leg to Merzouga. A private chauffeur-guide makes the scenic roads comfortable, and we pad every drive time for stops.
  • Spring and autumn are loveliest — warm days, cool desert nights and, in spring, the roses in bloom in the Valley of Roses. Summer is very hot in the south, so we start early and keep the midday hours easy; winter desert nights are cold and starlit, so bring a warm layer.
  • The whole journey is private and chauffeured throughout, staying in characterful kasbah-hotels and an en-suite luxury camp — no shared groups at any point.

Frequently asked

How is this different from your other 5-day Sahara itinerary?

Our other 5-day desert trip heads to the wild Erg Chigaga dunes beyond M'hamid, reached by a long off-road 4x4 crossing to an exclusive-use camp. This route takes the classic eastern kasbah road — Aït Ben Haddou, Skoura, the Dadès and Todra gorges — to the great dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, with a sunset camel ride into the sand. Erg Chebbi is the larger, more accessible dune sea and the iconic image of the Moroccan Sahara.

Is five days enough to reach the Sahara and back from Marrakech?

Comfortably, at a steady pace. Five days lets you cross the Atlas to the kasbahs, take in Skoura, the Dadès and Todra gorges, spend a night at a luxury camp on the Erg Chebbi dunes and return — without rushing the highlights. It does involve scenic driving days; if you would prefer shorter daily distances, we can extend to six or seven days with an extra night in the gorges or the desert.

What is the luxury desert camp like?

A private, comfortable camp on the Erg Chebbi dunes with en-suite tents, proper beds and bathrooms, fine dining under the stars and uninterrupted night skies far from town light. You reach it by a sunset camel ride into the sand, with a 4x4 alternative if you prefer. We describe it generically and confirm the specific camp in your written proposal.
