Why Essaouira
Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is the most relaxed coastal escape in Morocco, and a lovely change of pace after the heat of Marrakech. Three hours west by private car, its blue-and-white medina is small, walkable and refreshingly calm; its 18th-century ramparts catch the Atlantic light; and its seafood is the freshest in the country. Couples settle into a boutique riad within the walls or a beachside retreat just south, fill the days with leisurely lunches and a private hammam, and end them with the catch of the day grilled to order as the sun drops into the ocean. It is also the gateway to the argan road and the oyster lagoons of Oualidia.
What to see
The Portuguese cannon walls above the Atlantic catch the finest light of the day — a romantic stroll as the sky turns and the fishing fleet comes in.
Choose from the morning's catch and have it grilled to order, or reserve a chef's table — Morocco's freshest seafood, paired with a crisp white and the sound of the waves.
Visit a women's cooperative on the road in from Marrakech to see argan pressed by hand — and taste the oils and amlou before choosing a bottle to take home.
Long, near-private sands at Sidi Kaouki to the south for a horseback ride, and the oyster lagoon of Oualidia to the north for a leisurely lunch.

Very much so. A day trip leaves only 4–5 hours on the coast after the drive; an overnight or two lets you enjoy a boutique riad, a slow seafood dinner and the ramparts at dusk and dawn — the most romantic hours, when the crowds have gone.
The breeze and cool Atlantic make Essaouira better for long beach walks, horseback rides and spa afternoons than for swimming. For warmer, calmer water, we can pair it with Sidi Kaouki to the south or onward to Agadir.
