Why Sahara & Merzouga

No honeymoon moment rivals a night in the Sahara. Erg Chebbi is a 22km sea of orange dunes near Merzouga, rising up to 150m — and the setting for the most exclusive desert camps in Morocco: canvas suites with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms, a private candlelit dinner served on the sand, a fire and Gnaoua music, and a sky so dense with stars it feels invented for the two of you. The journey is part of the romance — a chauffeured route over the Tizi n'Tichka and through the gorges, or a flight to Errachidia and a short transfer — ending with a slow camel ride into the dunes as the light turns to copper.

What to see

Highlights of Sahara & Merzouga.

01

Camel ride into the dunes

A gentle 60–90 minute ride from the village to your private camp, timed for late afternoon when the dunes turn copper and the only sound is the sand.

02

Your private luxury desert camp

Canvas suites with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms, a candlelit dinner served just for the two of you, and Gnaoua musicians around the fire under an extraordinary sky.

03

Sunrise on the high dune, together

Climb the soft ridge above camp at first light and watch the sun rise over the Algerian horizon in complete silence — coffee waiting on your return.

04

Erg Chigaga, the wilder retreat

Further south and reached by private 4x4 from M'Hamid — quieter, more remote, fewer camps. Our preference for couples who want the desert almost entirely to themselves.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 9h chauffeured drive Marrakech → Merzouga (we split it with a luxury overnight). Or fly to Errachidia and transfer.
  • What to pack: Layers for cool desert nights, a scarf for blowing sand, a headlamp and slip-on shoes — the camp provides the rest.
  • Connectivity: Mobile signal at the camp edge; most luxury camps keep Wi-Fi minimal by design — the point is to disconnect.

FAQ

Sahara & Merzougacommon questions.

Can we visit the real Sahara as a day trip from Marrakech?+

No — the great dunes of Erg Chebbi and Chigaga are some hours away and deserve at least an overnight. For a quick desert evening near the city, the Agafay stone desert offers a private lantern-lit camp; for the true Sahara, give it the time it deserves.

When is the best time for a desert honeymoon?+

October–April is the season, with March and November ideal: warm days, cool starry nights perfect for the fireside. July–August daytime temperatures exceed 45°C and many camps close — best avoided.

Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga for couples?+

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is more accessible and has the widest choice of luxury camps. Erg Chigaga is wilder, quieter and reached by private 4x4 — the choice for couples who want the deepest seclusion and the most remote camp.
