The towering Erg Chebbi dunes glowing copper at sunset — Maison Lumière

Merzouga or Zagora — which Sahara is yours?

Two gateways, two very different journeys. We weigh dune height, drive time, the finest private camps, and which desert best suits a luxury or honeymoon escape.

Morocco offers two great Sahara gateways: Merzouga, set against the dunes of Erg Chebbi in the far south-east, and Zagora, the threshold to M'Hamid and the Draa Valley to the west. Both are sublime, and neither is interchangeable. Here is how we help our guests choose the desert that suits the journey they are dreaming of.

What are the dunes truly like?

Erg Chebbi at Merzouga rises to around 150 metres — among the tallest in North Africa. The sand sea runs roughly 22 km by 5 km, vast enough that a twenty-minute walk from camp leaves you alone in absolute silence, the dunes shifting from pale gold at midday to deep copper and amber at dusk. For a couple, watching that light fade from a private terrace is unforgettable.

The dunes near Zagora — properly Erg Chigaga, beyond M'Hamid — are lower but spread across a broader, wilder expanse. Few reach them, and the absence of camel-train bustle lends a genuinely remote feeling. You arrive by 4x4 across the desert rather than on foot from camp — an adventure in itself.

Distance from Marrakech

Merzouga lies roughly 560 km from Marrakech — nine to ten hours by private car via the Dades Gorge, Tinghir and the Tafilalet. The journey is half the reward: the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, the rose valley of Kelaat M'Gouna, the Todra Gorge. We always break it with a night in a beautiful kasbah, so it unfolds gently.

Zagora is 365 km from Marrakech — five to six hours through the Draa Valley, winding past Ouarzazate (worth a pause for Aït Ben Haddou) and along the Draa River through 150 km of date-palm oasis. If your Morocco journey is five days or fewer, Zagora is the more graceful choice.

The camps and how you sleep

Merzouga holds Morocco's finest concentration of luxury desert camps — private ensuite tents with proper beds and terraces, heated floors for cold nights, and chefs serving multi-course dinners beneath the stars. We reserve the very best for you, the kind of camp where a candlelit dinner on the sand and a Berber drum circle feel utterly your own.

Zagora's M'Hamid offers fewer camps, but a handful of refined boutique operations match that comfort while remaining far less photographed. The drive across the piste to Erg Chigaga adds a true sense of adventure that Merzouga, set right at the dune edge, does not. Either way, we ensure your tent is the loveliest in the camp.

What else lies nearby?

Merzouga is ringed by wonders: the Todra and Dades gorges, the vast Tafilalet palm grove, and the ancient ksar town of Rissani with its storied market — each a private excursion we can weave into your days.

Zagora's Draa Valley is a destination in itself: kasbahs, mudbrick villages and old caravan sites line the river road, and M'Hamid remains an evocative desert frontier and the departure point for longer camel journeys. See our Draa Valley journeys here.

Frequently asked

For a first Sahara experience, Merzouga or Zagora?

For most honeymooners and first-time desert travellers, Merzouga. Its Erg Chebbi dunes rise taller and more cinematically, and the finest private camps gather here — ensuite tents, candlelit dinners on the sand, stargazing in deep silence. Zagora sits closer to Marrakech for those short on time, though its dunes at M'Hamid are gentler.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Around nine to ten hours by private chauffeured car via the Dades Gorge. We always shape it as an unhurried two-day journey with a night in a beautiful kasbah en route, so the road becomes part of the romance rather than a transfer to endure.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Zagora?

Five to six hours through the Draa Valley — one of the most scenic drives in Morocco, following a river of date palms for over 150 km along an ancient caravan corridor. We travel it privately, pausing wherever the light and the kasbahs invite it.

What is the best time of year to visit the Moroccan Sahara?

October to April is ideal — pleasant days of 20–28°C, cold but manageable nights, and light of extraordinary clarity. July and August can exceed 45°C at midday, leaving the dunes uncomfortable in daylight. For a honeymoon, the cooler months and their long golden hours are unmatched.

Can you combine Merzouga and Zagora in one journey?

Yes, over a nine- to twelve-day itinerary. A graceful loop from Marrakech runs south to Zagora and M'Hamid, east through the Draa Valley, north to the Dades and Todra gorges, and into Merzouga before returning via the Tafilalet — a slow, scenic arc we tailor entirely to you.

Are there luxury camps at both Merzouga and Zagora?

Yes. Merzouga holds the greatest concentration of exquisite desert camps — private ensuite tents, heated floors for cold nights, chefs preparing multi-course dinners under the stars. Zagora's M'Hamid offers a smaller selection of refined camps with a quieter, more remote character. We secure the finest available for your dates.

Ready for the dunes?

We compose private desert escapes for both gateways.
