Why Tinghir

Tinghir is where the kasbah road turns truly cinematic — a wide, fertile palm oasis spread beneath the southern Atlas, and the threshold of the Todra Gorge, where the river has cut a sheer 300-metre slot through the rock. For couples it makes a beautiful, restful overnight: a restored kasbah or oasis retreat with a terrace over the palms, a private dinner under the stars, and the canyon walked privately at first light, before another soul arrives. By day the palmery is a green ribbon to wander hand in hand, the Glaoui kasbah glows on its hill, and the great red narrows close above the river like a cathedral. We travel it slowly, by private chauffeur, so the drama is savoured rather than rushed.

What to see

Highlights of Tinghir.

01

The Todra narrows at dawn

Sheer 300-metre limestone walls closing to a slot barely 10 metres wide — walked privately at first light, with the scenic palm-oasis drive in as part of the spectacle, before the day groups arrive.

02

A slow morning in the palmery

One of the longest oases in southern Morocco, some 50 km of dates, figs and pomegranates worked by Berber farmers — a gentle, green private walk through terraced gardens and irrigation channels.

03

The Glaoui kasbah & old quarters

The 19th-century fortress on the hill above town, and the earthen village quarters below with their defensive towers and painted doors — atmospheric, photogenic and almost untouristed.

04

An oasis retreat for the night

A restored kasbah or palm-edge retreat with a terrace facing the canyon and a candlelit table under the stars — turning a transit town into a romantic overnight on the road south.

FAQ

Tinghircommon questions.

Is Tinghir worth an overnight, or just a pass-through?+

For couples, an overnight transforms it. A restored kasbah retreat above the palms, a private dinner under the stars and the gorge walked privately at dawn — before the buses arrive from Ouarzazate — make Tinghir a romantic highlight rather than a two-hour photo stop.

How dramatic is the Todra Gorge?+

Profoundly so — the main narrows close to barely 10 metres wide, with sheer limestone walls rising 300 metres on either side of the shallow river. Walked privately in the soft early light, it is one of the most awe-inspiring and intimate landscapes in southern Morocco.

Todra or Dadès for a honeymoon route?+

Both, ideally — they are complementary. The Todra is the dramatic, enclosed slot canyon; the Dadès is wider and longer, with the famous switchback road. We thread the two together privately, with an oasis or kasbah retreat between them, on the way to the dunes.
