Why Skoura

Skoura is the loveliest secret on the kasbah road — a vast date-palm oasis east of Ouarzazate where ancient earthen fortresses stand half-hidden among the fronds, and where one of Morocco's most celebrated boutique hideaways has long drawn the discerning traveller. Within the palmeraie, restored kasbahs have become exquisite small retreats: walled gardens, a hammam, a private pool, candlelit dinners under the palms and the deep silence of the oasis at night. For couples it is the perfect romantic pause between the Atlas and the Sahara — a slow afternoon cycling the shaded oasis tracks, a private visit to the great Amerdil kasbah, and a long, unhurried dinner before the dunes. We always build it as a proper overnight, never a hurried photo stop.

What to see

Highlights of Skoura.

01

Kasbah Amerdil, privately

The 17th-century earthen fortress at the heart of the palmeraie — the one pictured on the old 50-dirham note — visited privately and at leisure, with the oasis to explore by bicycle or mule on either side.

02

A slow cycle through the palmeraie

The flat, shaded oasis tracks, watered by centuries-old underground channels from the Atlas snowmelt, make a gentle and romantic private ride between the kasbahs — green, cool and almost entirely your own.

03

Restored kasbah retreats

Skoura's oasis hides some of the finest boutique kasbahs in the south — beautifully restored earthen retreats with walled gardens, a pool and superb kitchens, a serene base for a romantic night.

04

The Valley of Roses, in season

Arriving from the east in May, the road passes the damask-rose fields of Kelaat M'Gouna, harvested for rosewater and perfume — a fragrant detour and a bottle of rose oil to take home as a first memento.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 42 km (45 min) east of Ouarzazate on the N10 kasbah road toward Boumalne Dadès
  • Best combined with: Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dadès Gorge in a southern loop
  • Date harvest: October brings the date harvest — the palmeraie is at its most active and the Medjool dates sold at the roadside stalls are exceptional

FAQ

Skouracommon questions.

Is Skoura worth an overnight on the road to the Sahara?+

Very much so — and for honeymooners it is one of the most romantic stops on the southern route. Rather than passing through in two hours, a night in a restored boutique kasbah among the palms, with a private dinner and the deep oasis silence, turns Skoura into a highlight rather than a transit.

How does Skoura differ from Aït Ben Haddou?+

Aït Ben Haddou is the dramatic, cinematic set piece; Skoura is greener, quieter and more intimate — an oasis of palms and hidden kasbahs rather than a single great ksar. Many couples savour both on the road south: Aït Ben Haddou for the golden-hour spectacle, Skoura for the serene overnight.

What is there to do at Skoura for a couple?+

Cycle the shaded oasis tracks between the kasbahs, visit the Amerdil fortress privately, unwind by the pool of a restored kasbah retreat and dine under the palms. It is a place to slow down — gentle, green and beautifully private.
