Why Tafraout

Tafraout is the most surreal and serene corner of the Anti-Atlas — a palm oasis cradled among rounded pink-granite mountains that glow rose and orange at dawn and dusk, with a famous field of painted boulders nearby and, each February, the hills blushing white and pink with almond blossom. For couples it is a peaceful, otherworldly escape far from the resorts: golden-hour walks among the glowing rocks, a private trail through the Berber villages of the Ameln valley, and the deep quiet of a granite oasis at night. We travel it privately by chauffeur-guide from the coast, building in the most beautiful light of the day and a characterful retreat in which to slow right down.

What to see

Highlights of Tafraout.

01

The painted rocks at golden hour

Acres of granite boulders south of town, painted in 1984 by the artist Jean Vérame and now weathered to soft earth tones — an extraordinary open-air artwork in the wild Anti-Atlas, at its most magical in the low evening light.

02

Almond blossom in the Ameln valley

From late January to mid-February the almond trees cover the terraces in white and pale-pink bloom against the ochre granite — one of Morocco's loveliest seasonal spectacles, celebrated at the village blossom festival.

03

A private Ameln valley walk

A gentle guided walk between the Berber villages strung along the valley above the palm oasis, with traditional houses and Anti-Atlas architecture and barely a tourist in sight.

04

Granite peaks for the adventurous

The pink-granite massif offers quiet multi-day trekking with nights in Berber gîtes and the summit of Jbel Lkst (2,359m) — a remote mountain adventure for couples who want one.

FAQ

Tafraoutcommon questions.

When does the almond blossom appear in Tafraout?+

Typically late January to mid-February, depending on the winter — the bloom rarely lasts more than two to three weeks, and the peak often comes just before the village blossom festival. We track conditions closely and advise on exactly when to come for the most beautiful display.

Are the painted rocks still worth seeing?+

Yes — the original 1984 colours have softened to gentle earth tones over the decades, but the site remains a genuinely striking landscape artwork. Visited at golden hour, with the granite glowing rose-pink around it, it is one of the most romantic and surreal spots in the south.

Is Tafraout easy to reach?+

The main road from Agadir is paved throughout, and we travel it privately with a chauffeur-guide — a scenic 2.5-hour drive through the Anti-Atlas. The valley villages are easily reached by car; only the higher granite trails need walking boots rather than any special vehicle.
