Why Akchour

Akchour is the loveliest wild escape in the Rif — a forested gorge of emerald cascades and turquoise pools threading the protected fir woods of Talassemtane National Park, 30 km from the blue city of Chefchaouen. For couples it makes an exhilarating, romantic day in nature: a private guided walk up the river to the waterfalls, a cool swim in a clear pool with no one else around, and, for those who want it, the longer trail to the natural rock arch of Pont de Dieu, framing the valley and sky. We pair it with a stay in Chefchaouen and a private chauffeur-guide, so a famous hike becomes an intimate day out — wild, green and entirely at your own pace.

What to see

Highlights of Akchour.

01

Pont de Dieu, the natural arch

A vast natural limestone arch spanning the Oued Farda gorge, formed over millennia — reached on the longer upper trail through the canyon, with river crossings and a little scrambling. Privately guided, it is one of the most dramatic and romantic natural sights in the Rif.

02

The emerald cascades & gorge trail

A guided walk up the river through a narrowing limestone gorge to a 20 m waterfall feeding a clear turquoise pool — a cool, green and refreshing private morning, with higher cascades for those who want to linger and walk on.

03

Talassemtane's protected fir forest

The trail threads one of the most biodiverse forests in northern Morocco — rare Moroccan fir, Atlas cedar and Rif oak, with Barbary macaques moving through the canopy. A hushed, fragrant walk in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, far from any crowd.

04

A private swim in the gorge pools

The clear, cold pools below the falls — the main pool especially — are deep enough for a refreshing swim from May to September. A guide leads you to the quietest, prettiest pools beyond the main cascade for a private dip together.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 30 km north-east of Chefchaouen — about 45 minutes on a winding mountain road; a private transfer from Chefchaouen is the comfortable way in
  • Trail options: Lower trail to the falls: 5–6 km return, 2.5–3h, easy to moderate. Upper trail to Pont de Dieu: 14–16 km return, 6–7h, moderate with some scrambling
  • What to bring: Good walking shoes (river crossings), water (2 litres minimum), sun protection; swimming kit if you plan to use the pools
  • Facilities: Simple cafés at the Akchour trailhead; no facilities on the trail. A private local guide makes the river crossings and quieter pools easy to find

FAQ

Akchourcommon questions.

Is the Akchour hike right for a couple?+

Very much so — it is the loveliest wild day from Chefchaouen, all emerald cascades, forest and turquoise pools. The lower falls trail is a gentle, beautiful walk most couples manage easily; the longer route to Pont de Dieu rewards keener walkers. With a private guide, it is an intimate, unhurried day in nature.

Can we swim at the Akchour waterfalls?+

Yes — the clear pool below the first cascade is the loveliest swimming spot, cool even in summer. A guide can lead you to quieter pools beyond the main fall for a private dip. The pools are best June–September; the water is very cold March–May from snowmelt.

How demanding is the trail to Pont de Dieu?+

The upper trail is moderate — about 7–8 km each way, with some rock scrambling and river crossings on stepping stones, taking 3–4 hours each way for fit walkers. The lower falls trail is considerably gentler and suits most active couples. A private guide makes either route easy and unhurried.

When is the best time to visit Akchour?+

April through June is ideal — the waterfalls run full, the forest is green and the gorge is comfortable for walking (18–26°C). September and October are also excellent and quieter. July and August are hottest and busiest, though swimming is at its best.
