Why Azrou

Azrou is the most peaceful surprise on the road south from Fes — a Berber market town set among the oldest cedar forests in North Africa, where wild Barbary macaques move quietly through groves of thousand-year-old trees. For couples it makes a refreshing, romantic pause in the cool mountain air: a private walk beneath the great cedars, a charming encounter with the macaques watched from a respectful distance, and the finest carved-cedar and Berber weaving in the country to choose from at the town's craft cooperative. Paired with the alpine calm of Ifrane just up the road, it is a serene green chapter between the imperial cities and the desert.

What to see

Highlights of Azrou.

01

Wild Barbary macaques among the cedars

The cedar forest south of Azrou is the most reliable place in Morocco to see wild Barbary macaques — troops moving quietly through the groves at road level, a charming, gentle encounter watched privately from a short distance. Please do not feed them.

02

The ancient cedar forest

One of the last great stands of Atlas cedar in North Africa, including a single tree more than 900 years old and over 40m tall — a hushed, fragrant private walk through cathedral-like forest.

03

The cedar craft cooperative

Azrou's artisan cooperative sells carved-cedar woodwork, Berber carpets and embroidered textiles at fixed, transparent prices — among the finest crafts outside the imperial souks, with no pressure and a piece to ship home as a memento.

04

The Tuesday souk

An authentic working Berber market drawing communities from the surrounding plateau — livestock, raw wool and mountain produce, far off the tourist circuit and a lively window into Middle Atlas life.

FAQ

Azroucommon questions.

Where are we most likely to see the Barbary macaques?+

The cedar forest south of Azrou is the most reliable spot in Morocco — troops are often at road level, especially in the morning. We watch them privately and quietly from a short distance, and never feed them. A morning in the Azrou forest pairs beautifully with lunch in alpine Ifrane.

How old are these cedars?+

Ancient — the great cedar near the road is estimated at around 900 years old, amid stands of Atlas cedar several centuries old. Walking beneath them in the cool, fragrant air is one of the most serene moments on the road from Fes.

Is the craft cooperative worth a stop?+

Yes — it is one of the most transparent and pleasant craft-buying experiences in Morocco, with fixed prices and craftspeople working on site. The carved-cedar pieces are genuinely distinctive and make a lovely memento to ship home.
