Why Meknes

Meknes is the quietest and most underrated of the imperial cities — and for couples who prefer their grandeur without the crowds, that is precisely its appeal. Built by the 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail to rival Versailles, it has spectacular monumental gates, the colossal Heri es-Souani granaries and a relaxed, lived-in medina you can wander privately at ease. It is also the gateway to two unmissable sights 30 minutes away: the Roman mosaics of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss — together one of the most rewarding private days in Morocco.

What to see

Highlights of Meknes.

01

Bab Mansour

Widely considered the most beautiful gate in Morocco — green-and-white zellige and carved stone, finest in the low light of early morning or evening.

02

Heri es-Souani & the Agdal basin

The sultan's vast vaulted granaries and stables beside a great reflecting reservoir — a serene, photogenic spot for an unhurried private wander.

03

Roman Volubilis

A UNESCO site of mosaics, arches and silver-green olive groves — the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, visited privately with a classical guide, 30 minutes away.

04

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

A sacred whitewashed town cascading over two hills, with a rare circular minaret and viewpoints made for a quiet moment together above the Roman plain.
