Why Béni Mellal

Béni Mellal is the green heart of the central Atlas — a town in the mountain foothills surrounded by some of the loveliest inland water and garden scenery in Morocco, and the natural place to break the chauffeured journey between Marrakech and Fes. For couples it offers a refreshing change of pace: the cascading spring gardens of Ain Asserdoun above the city, a private boat across the turquoise Bin el-Ouidane lake set deep in limestone gorges, and an early, crowd-free morning at the great Ouzoud Falls just east. We treat the city itself as a comfortable base and let the spectacular surrounding landscapes — the springs, the lake, the waterfalls — be the romance.

What to see

Highlights of Béni Mellal.

01

The Ain Asserdoun spring gardens

A natural spring complex on the hillside above town, feeding cascades through terraced gardens of olive, fig and orange, with the kasbah above and a sweeping view across the plain — one of the prettiest, most refreshing green escapes on the Marrakech–Fes route.

02

A private boat on the turquoise lake

Forty kilometres west, the Bin el-Ouidane reservoir lies in a dramatic limestone canyon — a turquoise lake to glide across by private boat, with cliff-top viewpoints and quiet gorge pools, one of the most beautiful inland water landscapes in Morocco.

03

The hilltop kasbah

The 18th-century kasbah crowning the spring gardens, its walls and towers largely intact, with panoramic views across the plain toward the High Atlas — a serene spot on the same hillside walk.

04

A crowd-free Ouzoud sunrise

Béni Mellal is the practical base for an early-morning visit to the great Ouzoud Falls, 80 km east — arriving before the day-trip crowds from Marrakech, with the cascades and rainbows almost to yourselves.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: About 2h30 (200 km) north-east of Marrakech on the N8; 2h30 south of Casablanca on the same road
  • Best combined with: Ouzoud Falls (80 km east) and Bin el-Ouidane reservoir (40 km west) in a single day or overnight
  • Market day: Thursday souk is the principal weekly market — one of the largest agricultural souks in the central region
  • Best for: A refreshing scenic overnight on the Marrakech–Fes route, with the springs, lake and waterfalls as the draw rather than the city itself

FAQ

Béni Mellalcommon questions.

Is Béni Mellal worth a stop between Marrakech and Fes?+

As a base for the surrounding scenery, very much so. The Ain Asserdoun spring gardens are lovely, the turquoise Bin el-Ouidane lake is spectacular, and the position 80 km from Ouzoud Falls makes it the ideal overnight for a crowd-free dawn at the waterfalls. We use the city simply as a comfortable base for the beautiful landscapes around it.

How do we visit the Bin el-Ouidane lake?+

We arrange a private boat and driver from Béni Mellal — the drive down into the limestone canyon is dramatic, and gliding across the turquoise reservoir, with the gorge viewpoints above, is one of the most striking and serene experiences in central Morocco.

How far is Béni Mellal from Ouzoud Falls?+

About 80 km east, roughly 1h30 by private car — much closer than Marrakech (2h30 away). Staying here lets you reach the falls at dawn, before the day-trip minibuses, with the cascades and rainbows almost to yourselves.
