Why Imlil

Imlil is a Berber village at 1,740 m in the Toubkal National Park, an hour south of Marrakech up the Mizane valley — and home to one of Morocco's most celebrated mountain retreats, a beautifully converted kasbah with Atlas-facing terraces, a hammam and the finest lodge dining in the range. For honeymooners it offers both worlds: serene, restorative nights amid cherry, walnut and apple orchards, with gentle private walks to the village of Aroumd or the Sidi Chamharouch shrine; and, for those who want it, a guided ascent of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa — non-technical in summer, a winter mountaineering objective in season.

What to see

Highlights of Imlil.

01

Summit Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m)

A two-day, mule-supported ascent — a night at the Toubkal Refuge, a dawn summit and descent to Imlil the same afternoon. Non-technical in summer; a winter climb from November to April.

02

A celebrated kasbah retreat

A beautifully converted Berber kasbah above the village, with Atlas-facing terraces, a hammam and the finest mountain dining in Morocco — a serene base for a romantic two nights.

03

Gentle walks to Aroumd & Sidi Chamharouch

An easy two-hour stroll to the hanging village of Aroumd, or up the Mizane valley to the white shrine of Sidi Chamharouch — rewarding private walks without the summit commitment.

04

The mule-track village circuit

A multi-day traverse linking Imlil, Tacheddirt and Ouaneskra — high passes, remote gîtes and an unbroken Atlas ridge for couples who want a real mountain adventure together.

FAQ

Imlilcommon questions.

How hard is the Toubkal summit trek?+

The summer route is a long, steep walk rather than a technical climb — demanding good fitness but no mountaineering skills. The main challenge is altitude, with 2,400 m of ascent from Imlil. Winter climbs above the snow line require crampons, an ice axe and experience.

Can we visit Imlil without trekking to the summit?+

Absolutely — and for honeymooners it is often the highlight. Imlil makes a serene lodge stay or day trip, with gentle walks to Aroumd, Sidi Chamharouch and the valley trails. The celebrated kasbah retreat above the village is worth the drive on its own.

When is the best time to visit Imlil?+

April–June and September–November offer stable weather, clear skies and comfortable temperatures for walking and lodge stays. July–August is warmer below; December–March brings snow and serious winter mountaineering above 3,000 m.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?+

Roughly 60 km — about one hour by private transfer through the Asni valley. It is the closest part of the High Atlas to the city and a very easy, beautiful escape.
