Why Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas rises straight from the Marrakech plain, and within an hour of the city couples can trade the heat for cool, clear mountain air. Around Imlil at 1,740m lie Berber villages, walnut and cherry orchards and a handful of exquisite mountain retreats — converted kasbahs with Atlas-facing terraces, fireside dinners and a hammam after a day on the trails. Whether you come for a single restorative night, a slow lodge weekend or a guided ascent of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m, the highest in North Africa), the mountains are the most peaceful, intimate chapter of a Moroccan honeymoon.

What to see

Highlights of Atlas Mountains.

01

Imlil & a lodge lunch

The gateway valley, with a long terrace lunch at a kasbah lodge and a gentle private walk to Aroumd or up to Sidi Chamharouch.

02

Summit Jbel Toubkal

A two-day, mule-supported ascent of North Africa's highest peak (4,167m) with certified guides — non-technical in summer, a winter mountaineering challenge in season.

03

Ourika valley & a riverside table

A softer day closer to the city: a long lunch with your feet near the water, the Monday Berber market and a stroll toward the Setti Fatma falls.

04

Asni & Ouirgane retreats

Lower, greener villages home to some of Morocco's loveliest boutique mountain lodges — perfect for a restful two-night escape without trekking.

FAQ

Atlas Mountainscommon questions.

Can you climb Toubkal without a guide?+

No — since 2018 a licensed guide is mandatory. We work with a small panel of certified local mountain guides we have known for years, so the experience is safe, private and unhurried.

Is the Atlas worth visiting if we don't trek?+

Absolutely — and for honeymooners it may be the highlight. Asni, Ouirgane and Ourika offer beautiful boutique lodge stays with short, easy walks. Many couples use the mountains as a serene two-night retreat after the buzz of Marrakech.
