Why Midelt

Midelt is the great crossroads of the high country — a frontier town set in a broad valley where the Middle Atlas meets the High, ringed by apple orchards and snow-capped ridges. For couples on the chauffeured route between Fes and the Sahara, it breaks the long road with a refreshing change of air and one of Morocco's least-visited alpine landscapes: the Cirque Jaffar, a vast natural amphitheatre carved into Jbel Ayachi (3,757m), reached privately by 4x4 through cedar forest. Stop overnight at a characterful kasbah-style retreat and you discover a genuinely off-the-map Morocco — a Sunday souk and fossil market underfoot, orchards heavy with fruit in autumn, and a serene mountain hush that few travellers ever find.

What to see

Highlights of Midelt.

01

The Cirque Jaffar, privately

A vast natural amphitheatre 20 km south-east of town, carved into Jbel Ayachi (3,757m) — Morocco's second-highest peak. A private 4x4 climbs through cedar and juniper forest to a ruined kasbah on the floor, with some of the most dramatic, untouristed mountain views in the Atlas.

02

The Sunday souk & fossil market

One of the largest market days in the region, drawing Berber farmers and nomadic herders, with a fossil and mineral market alongside — trilobites, ammonites and geodes from the ancient beds underfoot, a fascinating private wander and a memento to take home.

03

Apple orchards in the harvest

The Moulouya valley grows Morocco's finest apples, harvested late September to November when the roadside stalls overflow and the air smells of fruit — a soft, green pause between the two mountain ranges.

04

Jbel Ayachi, for the adventurous

The easternmost High Atlas summit (3,757m) and a remote, frontier-feeling two-day trek with certified guides and mule support — far quieter than Toubkal, for couples who want a real mountain together.

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 3h (210 km) south of Fes on the N13; 2h north of Errachidia on the same road
  • 4x4 for the Cirque: The piste into the Cirque Jaffar requires a high-clearance 4x4; we arrange vehicle and driver
  • Best combined with: Ifrane (1h north), Azrou cedar forest and the full Fes–Merzouga desert route
  • Altitude: Town at 1,508 m; Cirque Jaffar floor around 2,000 m; Ayachi summit 3,757 m — pack warm layers year-round

FAQ

Mideltcommon questions.

Is Midelt worth an overnight between Fes and the Sahara?+

Yes — it breaks the long road at a natural midpoint with a refreshing change of air, and the Cirque Jaffar is one of the most dramatic, untouristed detours in central Morocco. A night at a characterful kasbah retreat makes the journey south a pleasure rather than a slog.

When is the apple season in Midelt?+

Late September through November, peaking in October, when the roadside stalls overflow with fruit and the orchards are at their most beautiful — a lovely seasonal reason to linger a little.

Can we reach the Cirque Jaffar without trekking?+

Yes — a private 4x4 carries you to the floor of the amphitheatre through the cedar forest, so the great views are within easy reach of any couple. The full Jbel Ayachi summit (3,757m) is a serious two-day trek for the adventurous, with certified guides and mule support.
