Why Sidi Ifni

Sidi Ifni is the most atmospheric stretch of the deep-southern coast — a former Spanish enclave of faded Art Deco facades washed in Atlantic light, where the great red sea arch of Legzira rises straight from the sand a few kilometres north. For couples who want wild, undiscovered Morocco, it is a soulful counterpoint to the resorts: long, near-empty beaches, dramatic cliffs and ochre-and-white colonial streets that feel suspended in another age. We travel it privately with a chauffeur-guide and a beautifully restful coastal base, timing Legzira for the golden hour when the arch glows fire-red and the beach belongs, for an evening, to the two of you.

What to see

Highlights of Sidi Ifni.

01

Legzira sea arch at golden hour

Fifteen kilometres north, a vast red sandstone arch rises from the beach at low tide — at sunset it glows fire-red against the surf, one of the most dramatic and romantic coastal sights in Africa, visited privately when the light is at its best.

02

The Spanish Art Deco quarter

The sun-bleached central square and its 1930s colonial facades — the old town hall, consulate and a circular former church — a hauntingly beautiful, near-deserted streetscape to wander together, quite unlike anywhere else in Morocco.

03

Long, empty Atlantic beaches

The crescent beach below the Spanish lighthouse, backed by low cliffs and rarely another soul — a wild, romantic counterpoint to the busier resort sands of Agadir, made for an unhurried walk at dusk.

04

The Sunday souk

An authentic weekly market drawing Berber and Saharan communities from across the region — livestock, raw wool, spices and Saharan blue cloth — a vivid, untouristed window into the deep south.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: About 2h (170 km) south of Agadir on the N1 and then the R104 coast road via Tiznit
  • Best combined with: Tiznit (silversmithing town, 75 km north), Guelmim and the Anti-Atlas road to Taroudant
  • Accommodation: Characterful guesthouses and small coastal retreats rather than grand hotels — part of the wild, romantic appeal of the deep south
  • Legzira timing: Visit Legzira around low tide and golden hour, when you can walk beneath the arch and the rock glows fire-red

FAQ

Sidi Ifnicommon questions.

Is Sidi Ifni right for a romantic escape?+

For couples who love wild, undiscovered places, very much so — soulful Art Deco streets, dramatic cliffs and long empty beaches, far from the resort crowds. It is about atmosphere and seclusion rather than polish, and the Legzira arch at sunset is genuinely unforgettable.

How far is Legzira from Sidi Ifni?+

About 15 km north — a 20-minute private drive. The two are naturally paired: the Art Deco square and beaches of Sidi Ifni, and Legzira timed for golden hour when the arch is at its most spectacular.

Is the famous Legzira arch still there?+

Yes — the surviving larger arch to the south is intact and accessible at low tide. A smaller northern arch collapsed in 2016, but the drama of the site is undiminished; at sunset the red rock against the surf is one of the great romantic sights of the coast.
