Why M'Hamid el Ghizlane

M'Hamid el Ghizlane — the 'plain of the gazelles' — is the last oasis at the very end of the tarmac, where the Draa river vanishes into the sand and the great desert opens beyond. For couples who want the wildest, most secluded Sahara, it is the threshold of Erg Chigaga, reached only by private 4x4 across open hammada — a remote sea of dunes with a handful of exclusive camps and a silence found nowhere else. The romance is in the seclusion: canvas suites far from any other soul, a candlelit dinner served on the sand, nomadic music by the fire and a sky of impossible stars. We travel it slowly and privately, building M'Hamid as the doorway to the most intimate desert nights in Morocco.

What to see

Highlights of M'Hamid el Ghizlane.

01

Erg Chigaga, the secluded dunes

Morocco's wildest dune field, a 40 km sea of sand reached only by private 4x4 from M'Hamid — no tarmac, no crowds, just a handful of exclusive camps and acres of dunes for the two of you. Our choice for couples seeking the deepest seclusion the Sahara can offer.

02

The last palm groves & a nomad camp

The Draa's final date-palm corridors fade into the sand at M'Hamid, where Berber and Arab nomads still camp with their herds in winter — a private walk through the palmery and tea with a nomadic family, among the most authentic and moving desert moments in Morocco.

03

A candlelit camp under the stars

An exclusive canvas camp deep in Erg Chigaga: an en-suite suite, a private dinner served on the sand, nomadic music around the fire and a sky so dense with stars it feels invented for the two of you — the romantic heart of a deep-desert escape.

04

The piste to Foum Zguid, privately

A long 4x4 traverse west from M'Hamid across some of the emptiest country in Morocco to Foum Zguid — a full day of open hammada, minor dunes and the ruined Ksar Tissint, for couples who want a true private desert expedition together.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 98 km (2h drive) south of Zagora on the N9; 4h from Ouarzazate; 8h from Marrakech — we always split the journey over 2 days with a luxury overnight
  • Private 4x4: The 45 km piste to Erg Chigaga requires a high-clearance 4x4 and an experienced desert driver — we arrange vehicle and guide
  • Connectivity: Mobile signal in M'Hamid town; none at the Erg Chigaga camps — they are intentionally off-grid, by design
  • Best combined with: Zagora (98 km north) and the full Draa Valley corridor from Ouarzazate

FAQ

M'Hamid el Ghizlanecommon questions.

Erg Chigaga or Erg Chebbi for a secluded honeymoon?+

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is more accessible and has the widest choice of luxury camps. Erg Chigaga, reached privately by 4x4 from M'Hamid, is wilder, larger and far less visited — fewer camps, more space and a deeper silence. For couples who want the most remote and exclusive desert night, Chigaga is the next level.

What is the Nomad Festival in M'Hamid?+

The Festival International des Nomades is a three-day cultural gathering each March at M'Hamid, celebrating Saharan nomadic traditions — music, poetry, camel racing and desert storytelling. It is a genuine cultural event rather than a tourism show, and a memorable reason to time a deep-desert escape for spring.

How remote is the Erg Chigaga camp?+

The dunes lie about 45 km south-west of M'Hamid on a 4x4 piste — roughly 1.5 to 2 hours across open hammada, with no asphalt and the journey itself part of the romance. The camps are off-grid and spaced far apart, so the sense of having the desert to yourselves is complete.

When is the best time for a deep-desert escape?+

October through March, with November and December especially fine for settled weather and comfortable, starry camp nights. July and August exceed 45°C, when camps close or move and the desert is best avoided.
