Why Zagora

Zagora is the principal oasis town of the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, which runs roughly 200 km south-east from Ouarzazate through a corridor of date-palm groves, earthen kasbahs and nomadic encampments before dissolving into the pre-Saharan hammada. The chauffeured drive down the palm corridor is one of Morocco's great scenic journeys, and Zagora — with its famous 'Tombouctou 52 jours' caravan sign and its Saadian history — is the threshold to Erg Chigaga, the remotest and wildest of the great dune fields, reached by private 4x4 from M'Hamid. For couples who want the deep desert and its most exclusive, secluded camps, this is where the romance of the Sahara truly begins.

What to see

Highlights of Zagora.

01

The Draa Valley palm corridor

One of the world's longest date-palm oases — a chauffeured drive south from Ouarzazate through hundreds of thousands of palms, kasbahs and gardens, a cinematic prelude to the desert.

02

Erg Chigaga, the private dunes

Morocco's wildest dune field, reached by private 4x4 from M'Hamid — a sea of dunes to 100m with no asphalt and a handful of exclusive camps. Our choice for couples seeking the deepest seclusion.

03

Jbel Zagora at sunset

The flat-topped mesa above town offers a sweeping panorama over the oasis corridor and the Anti-Atlas — a romantic spot to watch the light fade over the palms.

04

M'Hamid & the nomadic piste

The last town on the tarmac, the threshold of the open desert — starting point for private camel rides, exclusive bivouacs and the piste west to Foum Zguid.

FAQ

Zagoracommon questions.

Zagora or Merzouga for a romantic Sahara trip?+

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is more accessible and more photographed — the classic Morocco dune. Zagora is the gateway to Erg Chigaga, which is larger, wilder and far less visited, reached by private 4x4. For couples who want the deepest seclusion and the most remote camp, Chigaga is the next level.

How far is Zagora from Marrakech?+

About 370 km — a 6-hour chauffeured drive via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and Ouarzazate. We split the journey over two days with a luxury overnight, adding Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate.

Is Zagora worth it beyond the dunes?+

Yes — the Draa Valley palm corridor is one of the great scenic drives in Morocco, sunset from Jbel Zagora is memorable, and the kasbah villages along the valley are authentic and little-visited.

When is the best time to visit Zagora?+

October through March, when days are comfortable (18–28°C) and nights are cool and starry — ideal for the desert camp. July and August top 42°C, when many camps close.
