Couple questions: Weddings and celebrations
What are Moroccan wedding traditions?
The best known are the diffa, a long feast of pastilla, tagines and whole-roast mechoui; the henna night the evening before, when the bride's hands and feet are painted; the amaria, an ornate palanquin on which the bride is carried; the negaffa, the wedding dresser who manages her kaftans and jewels; and Gnaoua or dakka musicians.

The short answer
The best known are the diffa, a long feast of pastilla, tagines and whole-roast mechoui; the henna night the evening before, when the bride's hands and feet are painted; the amaria, an ornate palanquin on which the bride is carried; the negaffa, the wedding dresser who manages her kaftans and jewels; and Gnaoua or dakka musicians.

In more detail
These are genuine rites of welcome and celebration, not photo props, and guests of every background tend to find them moving. Couples who are not Moroccan can borrow as many as they like. Even a small wedding feels rooted in the place with a henna night, a diffa and musicians under the lanterns.
The evening usually builds. The bride appears in a succession of kaftans and takchitas, each change managed by the negaffa, and the entrance on the amaria is often the high point. Music carries the night, with the trance rhythms of the Gnaoua or the drums and chant of a dakka troupe filling the courtyard.

Lanterns, candlelight and rose petals do the rest. Your planner finds the negaffa, the henna artist, the caterers for the mechoui and the musicians. They book up far ahead, so decide early which traditions you want.

Good to know
- Pick two or three traditions and do them properly rather than all of them at once.
- Book the negaffa and musicians at the same time as the venue.
- Brief guests on what each ritual means; it makes the evening richer.
