Couple questions: Food and romance
Can you have dinner in the Agafay desert from Marrakech?
Yes. The Agafay is a rocky stone desert about 45 minutes by road from Marrakech, and its tented camps serve candlelit dinners of tagine, grilled meats and mint tea under the stars. Many camps sit on ridges facing the Atlas, so you can watch the sunset first, then eat.

The short answer
Yes. The Agafay is a rocky stone desert about 45 minutes by road from Marrakech, and its tented camps serve candlelit dinners of tagine, grilled meats and mint tea under the stars. Many camps sit on ridges facing the Atlas, so you can watch the sunset first, then eat.

In more detail
It is not a dune desert. The Agafay is hammada, bare hills and dry plains, so it looks different from the Sahara at Merzouga. The appeal is that it is close, which makes it a good single romantic night away from the city.
After dinner, many camps have Berber and Gnawa music by the fire, and their skies are dark enough for stargazing. Some camps have transparent dome suites, so you can watch the stars from bed.

Many camps also sell day passes with pool access and a Moroccan lunch, if you want the view without staying overnight.
On the Agafay's edge, the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir adds kayaking and lakeside cafés, if you want lunch by the water before an evening at a camp.

Good to know
- Arrive before sunset. The light on the hills is the show.
- Take a warm layer. Winter nights are cold.
- Pair it with a dawn balloon flight, which lifts off near the Agafay.
