Couple questions: Couples practical
Can you use credit cards in Morocco?
In luxury riads, palace hotels and fine-dining restaurants, yes. In the souks, with smaller artisans, for tips and in the desert, mostly not; those run on cash. The practical approach on a honeymoon is both: a card for the big bills and a modest float of small dirham notes for everything else.

The short answer
In luxury riads, palace hotels and fine-dining restaurants, yes. In the souks, with smaller artisans, for tips and in the desert, mostly not; those run on cash. The practical approach on a honeymoon is both: a card for the big bills and a modest float of small dirham notes for everything else.

In more detail
Card acceptance follows the type of place. The more international and high-end the setting, the more likely it takes cards. Family shops in the medina, a café in a village or a camel handler in the dunes will expect cash.
Tips in particular should be in cash, ideally in dirhams. Staff can find it hard to change foreign notes, and coins from outside the eurozone cannot be exchanged at all.

Tell your bank you are travelling to Morocco before you go, and carry more than one card in case one is declined. Keep a card and some cash separate from your main wallet.

Good to know
- Carry two cards from different banks.
- Pay tips in cash, in dirhams.
- Keep a backup card in your riad's safe.
- Tell your bank before you travel so your card is not blocked.
- Check your card's foreign transaction fees before you go.
- Carry cash for the souks, the desert and small purchases.
