Couple questions: Couples practical
Do you need cash in Morocco?
Yes. Cards work in luxury riads, palace hotels and fine restaurants, but the souks, smaller artisans, tips and the desert run on cash. Carry a modest float of small notes in Moroccan dirhams. You withdraw from ATMs on arrival, or your driver or riad can arrange an exchange, because the dirham is a closed currency you cannot easily get beforehand.

The short answer

In more detail
Small notes matter most. Tips, a coffee, a taxi or a small purchase in the souk are easier with the right change, and staff may struggle to break large notes. Keep a few small notes separate from the rest of your money.
On a privately arranged trip, much of the spending is already covered, and your driver or riad can help you exchange money so you are never caught short. Cash still matters for the souks, tips and personal extras.

Desert camps and rural areas are where cards are least likely to work. Make sure you have enough cash before you leave the cities.

Good to know
- Withdraw dirhams at an ATM on arrival.
- Keep small notes for tips and small purchases.
- Stock up on cash before heading to the desert.
- Carry your cash in two places rather than one wallet.
- Ask your driver or riad if you need to exchange money mid-trip.
