Couple questions: Couples practical
Do women need to cover their hair in Morocco?
No. Non-Muslim women are not required to cover their hair in Morocco's streets, medinas or markets. A head covering may be requested inside certain mosques or very conservative religious sites, such as the prayer hall of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. Carry a light scarf in your bag and you are ready whenever it is needed.

The short answer

In more detail
Dress in Morocco covers a wide range. In Casablanca, Rabat and the newer parts of the cities, many Moroccan women wear contemporary western styles. In more traditional or rural areas, the djellaba or a long skirt with a headscarf is common. Visitors are not expected to imitate local dress.
What is appreciated is modesty in the medinas, markets and villages: shoulders and knees covered, loose rather than tight clothes. That matters more than whether your hair is covered.

The same scarf does several jobs. It covers your shoulders in a souk, your hair at a mosque, your face in a desert wind and your shoulders again on a cool evening.

Good to know
- Choose a scarf in cotton, silk or another natural fibre.
- Keep it in your day bag rather than at the riad.
- Cover your hair if asked at a religious site.
- Watch what other visitors do at a religious site, and follow the staff's lead.
