The short answer
A good riad breakfast is a full Moroccan table. Expect msemen or beghrir pancakes, warm khobz bread, argan oil, amlou made from almonds, argan and honey, local honey, fresh orange juice, and mint tea or coffee. It is usually served in the courtyard or on the roof terrace.

In more detail
Our riad guide treats breakfast as a test of the house. A spread of toast and jam alone is a sign that corners have been cut. The riads we work with set a much better table.
Amlou is the one to look out for. It is a smooth paste of argan oil, almond and honey, and it is worth carrying a jar home. Buy it from a certified women's cooperative rather than a street seller.

Breakfast is also when a riad's size shows. Many keep only a handful of suites, so the courtyard feels like your own in the morning.
In the desert, breakfast is simpler: bread, honey, olive oil, coffee and mint tea, served as the sun rises over the dunes. After a balloon flight near Marrakech, a traditional Moroccan breakfast on landing is usually part of the morning.

Good to know
- Ask for breakfast on the roof on a clear morning.
- Try culinary argan oil on warm bread.
- Tell the riad about dietary needs before your first morning.
