Couple questions: Honeymoon planning
Can we self-drive on a Morocco honeymoon?
Yes, on the paved roads. The motorways between Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Marrakech are modern, and the national roads over the Atlas reach the main desert gateways. A standard car covers the classic southern loop. Only the piste to Erg Chigaga needs a 4WD. Avoid night driving in the mountains and the south.

The short answer
Yes, on the paved roads. The motorways between Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Marrakech are modern, and the national roads over the Atlas reach the main desert gateways. A standard car covers the classic southern loop. Only the piste to Erg Chigaga needs a 4WD. Avoid night driving in the mountains and the south.
In more detail
Our road-trip guide is positive about self-driving for confident drivers. The motorway network is fast and well signposted. The national roads across the Atlas and into the south are paved, though narrower and sometimes damaged. Expect gendarmerie checkpoints and mountain switchbacks.
The medinas of Marrakech and Fes are effectively car-free, so you park at the gates and walk or take a small taxi in. Many riads will meet you at an agreed drop-off point. Night driving is not recommended in the Atlas or on rural roads south of Ouarzazate, because of livestock, unlit mopeds and unmarked speed bumps.

The honest question for a honeymoon is whether you want to watch the road or the view. The drive from Marrakech to Merzouga alone is about 8 hours 30 minutes. With a private chauffeur-guide, both of you see the kasbahs and gorges, and the stops appear at the right moments.

Good to know
- Plan to arrive before dark on any mountain or desert stage.
