Couple questions: Romantic places
Marrakech or Fes for a honeymoon?
Marrakech, for most couples. It is easier to arrive in, has more direct flights, a wider choice of riads and palace hotels, and the Atlas and Agafay close by. Fes suits couples who want living history and a slower, more absorbing medina. They are about 6 hours 30 minutes apart by road, so many longer trips include both.

In more detail
Our comparison sums up the difference as cosmopolitan against contemplative. Marrakech has Jemaa el-Fna at dusk, the Majorelle Garden, rooftop dining and a mature hotel scene, with branded hotels, design riads and desert camps in the Agafay. It is also the natural start for the Sahara and the Atlantic coast.
Fes is quieter and older in feel. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is a car-free maze of lanes, and its accommodation leans towards atmospheric medina riads with fewer international hotels inside the walls. Our notes call Fassi cooking the most refined in Morocco, and suggest three or four days to begin to know the city.

For a first honeymoon in Morocco, Marrakech is the simpler base. For a trip of nine or ten days, our suggested circuit is Marrakech first, then on to Fes for a few nights, and home from Fes. Marrakech to Fes is about 530 km by road, or a short domestic flight.
