Couple questions: Romantic places
Marrakech or Essaouira for a honeymoon?
Usually both. Marrakech gives you the palaces, souks and rooftop dinners; Essaouira, about 2 hours 45 minutes west, gives you sea air, ramparts at sunset and grilled fish by the port. Our suggested plan is three nights in Marrakech, then two or three in Essaouira. In high summer, Essaouira is the cooler half of the trip.

The short answer
Usually both. Marrakech gives you the palaces, souks and rooftop dinners; Essaouira, about 2 hours 45 minutes west, gives you sea air, ramparts at sunset and grilled fish by the port. Our suggested plan is three nights in Marrakech, then two or three in Essaouira. In high summer, Essaouira is the cooler half of the trip.

In more detail
The two feel like different countries, our comparison says, though they are only about 190 km apart. Marrakech is intense and theatrical, with a walled medina, Jemaa el-Fna and luxury riads behind cedar doors. Essaouira is a calm, windswept Atlantic port with 18th-century sea walls and Gnawa music in its squares.
The weather is the big practical difference. In July and August, Marrakech averages highs of about 38 to 42°C, while Essaouira sits around 22 to 25°C thanks to the trade winds. Essaouira has kilometres of beach south of the ramparts, though it is better for walking and wind sports than for lazy swimming.

That is why we pair them. A few nights in Marrakech for the city, then the drive west for slower days by the sea, and home from either. In summer, reverse the weight and give Essaouira more nights. In December to February, the wind peaks on the coast, so plan for walks rather than sunbathing.
