Couple questions: Weddings and celebrations
Can you have a wedding in Essaouira?
Yes. Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast about 190 km or two and three-quarter hours by road from Marrakech, is a lovely setting for a symbolic wedding or celebration. It brings sea air, ramparts and a relaxed coastal mood, and it is the natural choice for a summer date, because the coast stays much milder than Marrakech and the desert.

The short answer

In more detail
A terrace above the Atlantic suits a ceremony and a long dinner, with the light of the coast doing much of the decoration. The town itself is calm and walkable, and guests often enjoy a day or two by the sea before or after the wedding.
The main thing to plan for is the wind. Essaouira's breezes are part of its character and take the edge off summer heat, but they affect outdoor ceremonies, flowers and hair. A good planner will have a sheltered plan and timings that suit the conditions.

Many couples combine settings: a henna night or welcome dinner in a Marrakech riad, then the main celebration on the coast, or the other way round. The transfer between the two is an easy half-day.

Good to know
- Choose Essaouira if your date is in June, July or August.
- Ask the venue for a wind-sheltered back-up space.
- Combine it with a Marrakech stay for guests flying in.
