Couple questions: Food and romance
What seafood can you eat in Essaouira on a honeymoon?
Essaouira is a working fishing port, so grilled fish and seafood straight off the boats are the town's main meal. Sardines split and grilled at the port are its defining bite. A fish tagine, chermoula and a seafood pastilla are worth trying, and a candlelit dinner above the ocean makes a good last night.

The short answer
Essaouira is a working fishing port, so grilled fish and seafood straight off the boats are the town's main meal. Sardines split and grilled at the port are its defining bite. A fish tagine, chermoula and a seafood pastilla are worth trying, and a candlelit dinner above the ocean makes a good last night.

In more detail
The town sits about 2 hours 45 minutes (190 km) west of Marrakech, which makes it the usual coastal end to a city and desert honeymoon. Our coastal guide calls it a bolt-hole rather than a sunbathing resort, because the wind rarely drops.
Days there are slow. A walk on the Skala ramparts, an hour among the galleries and woodworkers, an afternoon hammam, then fish at sunset is the rhythm our coastal guide describes.

If you take a cooking class in Essaouira, the focus is the sea: fish tagine, chermoula marinade and coastal salads.
Essaouira is windy in every season. That keeps it cool in summer, when Marrakech can pass 40°C, but it also means an outdoor dinner needs a sheltered terrace or a warm layer.

Good to know
- Eat lunch at the port and keep the evening for a quieter dinner.
- Bring a windproof layer for dinner outside.
- Pair Essaouira with Oualidia if oysters are on your list.
