What happens in a couples hammam?

The short answer
You warm up in a steam room, are washed with black olive soap, then scrubbed firmly with a kessa glove. A rhassoul clay mask and a warm rinse follow. In a spa it often ends with an argan-oil massage side by side, then rest and mint tea. Allow 45 to 90 minutes.

In more detail
Step one is the steam. A therapist pours warm water over you until your skin softens. Then savon beldi, a dark soft soap made from black olives, is spread on and left for a few minutes.
The scrub is the part first-timers remember. It is firm, and the amount of dead skin it lifts surprises most people. After that comes the clay mask, sometimes with an argan or rose treatment, and a rinse.

The length depends on whether you add a massage. At a luxury spa you can set the intensity, which matters if one of you prefers a gentler treatment. Treatments vary a lot between properties, so we match you to a spa whose style suits you.
A longer spa afternoon can add a full argan-oil massage and a facial using local botanicals such as argan, rose and orange blossom. The rose comes from the Dades region around Kelaat M'Gouna, which harvests Damask roses each spring.

Good to know
- Tell the therapist if the scrub is too firm. It can be eased.
- Avoid booking it right before a long drive.
- Leave valuables in your room.
